Meta description optimization guide

Write summaries for searchers, not for a character counter

A meta description should accurately summarize the page and help a searcher decide whether the result is relevant. Google can generate snippets from page content and may not always use the meta description, so the checker treats length as an editing signal rather than a guarantee.

01

What the checker flags

Missing, unusually short, long, duplicated and badly formatted descriptions.

The checker identifies mechanical conditions that deserve review. A clean result means the description avoids those obvious problems, but relevance, accuracy and click usefulness still require editorial judgment.

02

Bulk mode helps find template copy

Repeated descriptions are often easier to spot across a large URL set.

Paste up to 500 rows as URL + tab + description, simple URL,description rows or description-only lines. Duplicate detection ignores capitalization differences and repeated whitespace so obvious template duplication is easier to find.

03

Long descriptions are not automatically wrong

Search snippets are query-dependent and available display space varies.

A long-description warning means the copy deserves review. Keep the page's useful differentiator and main value early enough that the message still works if the displayed snippet is shortened.

04

Descriptions should be page-specific

Generic marketing copy wastes a chance to explain why this exact URL is useful.

When bulk mode finds duplicates, review whether those pages solve different search intents. If they do, give each description enough unique context that a searcher can tell the results apart.
