Keyword cannibalization guide

Multiple ranking URLs are a clue, not proof of cannibalization

Real cannibalization analysis is about competition between URLs for the same search intent. SERPbeam uses query-page Search Console data, impression share and ranking proximity to surface likely conflicts while keeping benign secondary visibility separate.

01

Use query-page level Search Console data

The checker needs one row per query and page combination.

Required columns are Query, Page, Impressions and Position. Clicks are optional. You can paste CSV/TSV text or upload a CSV/TSV file. Duplicate query-page rows are aggregated automatically, with average position weighted by impressions.

02

Detection uses visibility share and ranking proximity

Two URLs appearing for the same query is not enough by itself.

SERPbeam compares the leading two URLs for each query. A likely conflict needs the second URL to hold a meaningful share of impressions and rank reasonably close to the leader. This avoids flagging every long-tail secondary impression as a problem.

03

Broad, Balanced and Strict sensitivity

The sensitivity control changes how much evidence is required before a query is labeled a potential conflict.

  • Broad: catches more possible overlaps. Useful for exploration, but expect more false positives.
  • Balanced: default mode for routine audits. Requires a meaningful second-URL impression share and reasonably close positions.
  • Strict: only surfaces stronger overlap. Best when you want a shorter list of likely conflicts.
  • Minimum query impressions: filters weak-evidence queries before classification so tiny impression counts do not dominate the audit.
04

Understand the three result types

The tool separates strong competition from normal secondary rankings.

  • Competing URLs: meaningful shared impression visibility with similar ranking positions. Review intent overlap first.
  • Multiple strong URLs: two URLs both rank strongly. This can be beneficial if the pages satisfy different intents, so do not consolidate automatically.
  • Dominant URL + secondary: one page clearly owns most visibility. Usually a lower-priority case unless the secondary URL is strategically important.
05

Decide whether to consolidate, differentiate or monitor

Search Console overlap is the start of the diagnosis, not the final action.

If two pages serve the same intent and neither clearly wins, consolidation may be appropriate. If they target adjacent intents, differentiate titles, headings, copy and internal links instead. If one URL already dominates, monitor before making disruptive changes. Never redirect or canonicalize pages solely because they appear together in this report.

06

Know what this checker cannot infer

The model works from performance data, not from full page content or SERP intent analysis.

SERPbeam cannot know whether two URLs intentionally satisfy different intents, whether Google is testing a temporary result, or whether seasonality caused the overlap. It also does not fetch pages, inspect canonical tags or compare page content in this version. Treat the output as a prioritized investigation list.
