Canonical tag guide

Review what the markup says before assuming what search engines will do

A canonical link is a consolidation hint, not a guaranteed indexing command. SERPbeam checks source-level canonical markup and relationships without pretending that paste-only HTML can verify crawl, index or live-target behavior.

Presence, empty values and multiple canonical tags

Start by confirming that the source contains one usable canonical declaration.

The checker finds link elements whose rel token includes canonical. No tag is reported as missing; more than one is flagged for review because competing declarations create ambiguity. An empty or missing href is also surfaced.

Target URL quality

Absolute HTTP(S) canonical URLs are the clearest implementation.

SERPbeam reviews whether the target is an absolute HTTP(S) URL, relative, protocol-relative, malformed or contains a fragment. Relative targets can be resolved when a valid Page URL is supplied, but the tool still recommends explicit absolute canonical URLs for clarity.

Self-reference, same-host alternate and different-host targets

The Page URL provides the context needed to classify the relationship.

A self-reference resolves to the supplied Page URL. A same-host alternate points to another URL on the same hostname. A different-host canonical points elsewhere. None of those categories is automatically right or wrong; the checker describes the relationship so you can compare it with the page's intended consolidation strategy.

Bulk mode reveals site-level patterns

Cross-page analysis can reveal chains and loops that are invisible on one page alone.

When pasted-page markers use full source URLs, SERPbeam builds a source-to-canonical map across the batch. It can then flag canonical chains, loops and canonical targets shared by several pages. Shared targets are shown as context rather than errors because intentional consolidation often sends many variants to one preferred page.

What source HTML cannot verify

Canonical correctness depends on live signals outside the pasted markup.

This tool does not fetch canonical destinations. It cannot confirm whether the target returns 200, redirects, is blocked, contains noindex, reciprocates a canonical, appears in a sitemap or is ultimately selected by Google. Those require live crawling or Search Console data.
